Galax Selected for Community Regional Mural Initiative

The project will bring a public mural to Galax, supporting ‘Round the Mountain’s mission to strengthen downtown development, community revitalization, and the creative economy.

(ABINGDON, Va. – Friday, February 20, 2026) – ‘Round the Mountain Artisan Network is proud to announce that the City of Galax has been selected to receive a public mural through the Community Mural Project, a regional initiative designed to celebrate Southwest Virginia’s culture, creativity, and strong sense of place.

The project will bring a large-scale mural installation to downtown Galax, further advancing ‘Round the Mountain’s mission to strengthen downtown development, support community revitalization, and grow the region’s creative economy through placemaking and cultural tourism.

“Round Mountain has long been an important partner for the City, and their funding of this latest mural in Downtown Galax is another instrumental step in the revitalization of the community,” said Michael Burnette, Galax City Manager. “Galax prides itself on its abundant outdoor recreation, deep musical traditions, and its embrace of the arts.  We proudly join with ‘Round the Mountain in protecting and celebrating our Appalachian arts heritage.”

A muralist selection process is currently underway, with project completion and a public unveiling anticipated in summer 2026.

Funded through the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), the Community Mural Project supports local revitalization efforts by enhancing public spaces and showcasing the artistic identity of Southwest Virginia communities. Through strategic public art investments, the initiative strengthens community pride, encourages visitation, and contributes to long-term economic development.

“Galax’s selection as the final mural in this regional initiative highlights the strength of its arts and music heritage,” said Kim Davis, Executive Director of Friends of Southwest Virginia and ‘Round the Mountain. “Galax has embraced the power of the arts as a driver of community energy and economic vitality. This mural will stand as both a dynamic visual landmark and a testament to the city’s dedication to cultivating a vibrant, welcoming community for both locals and visitors.”

A Request for Proposals (RFP) has been released for artists interested in designing and installing the mural. Regional muralists and qualified public artists are encouraged to review the full RFP and submission guidelines at www.friendsofswva.org/opportunities
