Friends of Southwest Virginia Announces High Definition Stream Study of the Clinch River
New study will provide critical data to guide recovery, improve safety, and strengthen outdoor recreation along the Clinch River.

ABINGDON, VA (Friday, April 3, 2026) –  Friends of Southwest Virginia is seeking proposals from qualified firms to conduct a High Definition Stream Study (HDSS) of the Clinch River, advancing regional efforts to assess impacts from Hurricane Helene and strengthen the long-term recovery of one of Southwest Virginia’s most important natural assets.

The study will examine approximately 135 miles of the Clinch River across Tazewell, Russell, Wise, and Scott counties. Using advanced survey technology, the project will provide a detailed, river-wide understanding of current conditions, including areas affected by storm debris, shifting river channels, and potential risks to public access points and infrastructure.

“This work is about giving our region the information it needs to move forward strategically,” said Kim Davis, Executive Director of Friends of Southwest Virginia. “The Clinch River is a critical resource for outdoor recreation and local communities. By taking a comprehensive look at current conditions, we can better prioritize recovery efforts, improve safety, and identify opportunities to strengthen and protect these assets for the future.”

The High Definition Stream Study will produce detailed mapping and data to support decision-making by localities, agencies, and partners. Findings will help identify areas of concern, guide restoration and mitigation efforts, and position the region to pursue future funding for recovery and resilience projects.

This project is part of a broader, federally supported initiative focused on assessing and restoring outdoor recreation assets following Hurricane Helene.

Deliverables from the selected firm will include high-resolution digital maps and datasets, along with a final report outlining key findings, risks, and recommended next steps.

Proposals are currently being accepted, with additional details available at friendsofswva.org/opportunities
