The construction of a trail from Breaks Interstate Park to downtown Haysi will allow the town to truly capitalize on economic opportunities through recent downtown revitalization improvements. Funds will cover the development of approximately 10 miles of trail and related trailhead amenities. Currently, the town is working on additional riverfront improvements including a boardwalk area. This riverfront area will tie directly into the proposed Breaks to Haysi trail and serve as a downtown trailhead. The proposed project will take advantage of the nearly 300,000 visitors that Breaks Interstate Park sees every year by connecting them more clearly to Haysi’s downtown. This trail will bring increased outside dollars to the region by giving visitors another reason to come and a reason to extend their stay.
This component of the SWVA Outdoors project will be implemented in close partnership with Spearhead Trails, Breaks Interstate Park, and the Town of Haysi. Part of the budget for this portion of the project includes two years of funding for three Trail Technicians working under Spearhead. These trail technicians will be working directly on the construction of the proposed trail and then on its maintenance once complete as well as the development and upkeep of other hiking and biking trails in Southwest Virginia.
